Redwoods and Lassen Volcanic

Gabby

To make a shorter post between the last one and my next I'm going to give an overall summary of these two parks.

We spent 3 days in Redwoods National Park (31Aug - 02Sep), focusing on the Southern parts of the park due to wildfire and wildfire smoke making most of the northern part inaccessible. We spent time in the Prairie Creek & Bald Hills Areas. The highlights included:

  • Brown Creek & South Fork Trail Loop (1st picture)

  • Tall Trees Trail (pictures 2-4)

  • Lady Bird Johnson Grove

  • James Irvine to Fern Canyon Trail (filmed in Lost World movie) (pictures 5-7)

  • Elk Prairie Campground

  • Big Tree (picture 8)

The trees were so amazing, though it made hiking difficult since all I wanted to do is look up.

After leaving the park we spent a night in Douglas City Campground (03Sep) as a middle point between Redwoods and Lassen Volcanic National Parks. We also stopped in Redding, CA getting Feast Coffee, Habit Burger for lunch, and stocking up on groceries. Then we continued to Lassen Volcanic National Park stopping at the northwest entrance to check out the visitor center and hike Manzanita Lake Trail for some great views of Lassen Peak. We spent the night in Lassen National Forest at Big Pine Campground.

We spent four more days in Lassen Volcanic National park with the following highlights:

  • Subway Cave (actually part of the National Forest and created by lava flow)

  • Butte Lake Trail & Butte Lake Campground

  • Cinder Cone Hike (had great views from the top of Fantastic Lava Beds, Painted Dunes, & Lassen Peak)

  • Bumpass Hell & Sulfur Works (Hydrothermal Features)

  • Lassen Peak Hike (windy but just amazing views of the entire park)

  • Huge Pinecones everywhere

  • Stargazing was amazing as it was so dark and there was so little light pollution (we even could see the Milky Way)

This park was just so cool and I’m so glad we took the time to visit here. There were some sections that were closed due fire damage a few years back so it would be a cool place to visit again so we can see those parts.

Next post will contain Yosemite National Park, which I absolute loved and there will be a ton of photos from our week long adventure in the park :)
